I’m glad you made it to my page. I’m Ashten Gallagher, LCSW-S, a council-approved supervisor in Texas, enabling me to provide clinical social work supervision for license upgrade. My goal is to empower LMSW’s in Texas by enhancing their careers through clinical supervision that’s affordable and accessible. Understanding Texas LCSW supervision requirements is essential for your journey. So, what do you as an LMSW in Texas need to know about becoming a clinical social worker? Let me guide you through the process of obtaining your clinical social work license.
To upgrade to a clinical, unrestricted license, you’ll need to do the following as outlined by Title 22, Part 34, Chapter 781 of the Texas Administrative Code:
Educational Requirements:
You must have a Master of Social Work (MSW) or a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Examination:
Pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Clinical Level Examination.
Experience:
Complete 3,000 hours of supervised clinical social work experience after obtaining your master's degree. This must be done over a minimum period of 24 months and must include at least 100 hours of direct supervision with an LCSW.
Supervision:
The supervision should be conducted by a BHEC council-approved supervisor in Texas. Their credentials are LCSW-S. This is your Texas LCSW Supervisor (hopefully me!)
Application and Fees:
Submit an application for licensure to the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners, along with the required fees.
Background Check:
Undergo a criminal background check.
Jurisprudence Exam:
Pass the Texas Social Work Jurisprudence Exam, which covers state laws and rules affecting social work practice.
